Understanding High-Speed Compression in Your Shock

Lainer Suspension High and Low Speed Compression Adjuster Introduction: When it comes to optimizing your dirt bike’s performance and control, understanding the intricacies of your suspension system is crucial. Among the various suspension adjustments, high-speed compression plays a vital role in handling the challenges within all disciplines of riding. In this blog post, we will dive into the importance, dynamics, and value of comprehending high-speed compression in your dirt bike shock, empowering you to fine-tune your suspension for an exhilarating and confident riding experience. Lainer Suspension USA offers High & Low-speed compression adjusters for all major shock manufacturers. Increasing the adjustability, allows the rider and tuner to make more finite adjustments to your suspension. High-speed compression refers to the resistance or damping force that your dirt bike shock applies to the suspension during rapid compression events. These events occur when encountering sharp impacts, such as landing from jumps, hitting square-edged bumps, or tackling aggressive terrain. High-speed compression damping controls the rate at which the shock compresses when subjected to these sudden and powerful forces. Properly adjusted high-speed compression plays a crucial role in maintaining stability and control while riding aggressively or at high speeds. By tuning the shock’s high-speed compression, you can regulate the rate at which the suspension compresses during intense impacts. Too little compression damping can result in excessive suspension movement, causing the bike to bottom out, lose traction, and compromise stability. Conversely, excessive compression damping can lead to a harsh ride, reduced suspension travel utilization, and a loss of contact with the ground. Finding the right balance is essential for achieving optimal stability, control, and confidence on the track or trails. Understanding high-speed compression also allows you to strike a balance between rider comfort and performance. It’s crucial to fine-tune your shock settings to suit your riding style, terrain, and personal preferences. By optimizing the high-speed compression, you can enjoy a smoother ride by effectively absorbing sharp impacts, minimizing harshness, and reducing rider fatigue. Simultaneously, finding the ideal setting maximizes the bike’s performance potential, enabling better traction, improved handling, and more efficient power transfer. Adjusting high-speed compression in your dirt bike shock involves making incremental changes to the damping settings. Some shocks allow you to adjust high-speed compression independently, while others may require adjusting the overall compression damping, which affects both low-speed and high-speed compression. It’s recommended to consult your bike’s owner’s manual or seek guidance from suspension specialists or experienced riders to ensure proper adjustment techniques and specifications based on your specific bike model. The process of understanding high-speed compression involves testing and fine-tuning your suspension settings. Begin with the manufacturer’s recommended baseline settings, then make incremental adjustments to the high-speed compression damping to find the optimal setting for your riding conditions. It’s essential to test the adjustments on various terrains, including jumps, rough sections, and corners, to evaluate the bike’s stability, control, and overall performance. Keeping detailed notes of the changes and their effects will help you develop a better understanding of how high-speed compression affects your bike’s behavior. Conclusion: Mastering the dynamics of high-speed compression in your dirt bike shock is a valuable skill that can elevate your riding experience to new heights. By understanding and adjusting high-speed compression damping, you can optimize stability, control, and rider comfort while pushing the limits of your bike’s performance. Remember, finding the right balance requires experimentation, testing, and fine-tuning based on your individual preferences and riding conditions. Unlock the full potential of your dirt bike by harnessing the power of high-speed compression and enjoy the thrill of a truly dialed-in suspension system.

PMX Racing 2004 RM125 Build

I purchased this bike in 2005 and raced it for a few years until the lure of the 4-stroke took hold. This poor girl got put to the wayside and didn’t see much riding in the years that followed. Then Covid came along and brought forth the era of the hobbyist. With all this time on our hands and nowhere to go, we spent a lot of the time either at the track (because riders are awesome and let nothing get in their way) or tinkering in the garage. When we heard the 2-Stroke nationals were going to be held in April we took that as our opportunity to bring the ol’ girl to life. My husband took her down to the frame and began the painstaking build that soon took a life of its own. We decided to go forward with a full frame-up restoration and make this into the dream bike she was destined to be. Finding parts was the greatest challenge, but we were able to partner up with some amazing companies that helped us in getting her together. Our dear friend Colin from Faster USA had grown to dread my arrivals, knowing every time I was bringing more parts to vapor hone. They rebuilt our wheels as well, set on retaining the stock hubs with the titanium ceracote to complement the overall esthetic we were after.  The motor had the big bore kit installed by Jeff Springman at Bill’s Pipes quite some time ago, so all that required was a refresh. Bill Cevera and Jeff have been there for us since 2005, retaining their pipe and silencer for this bike was a no brainer.  Whenever I build a bike on the design side, like most people I get an idea stuck in my head that I cannot let go.  My mind was set on a strict black and yellow combo with hints of red, I had given my ideas to Johnny at Viscid Designs and as usual they delivered. The crew at Spec Bolt were amazing to work with and we got the Nickel works hardware kit and they really pop when we put them on the bike. Sourcing some of the smaller parts proved more challenging, thankfully MotoSport.com was able to provide a large bulk of them. Given we are a suspension company the shock and forks on those bikes don’t have much available regarding aftermarket parts.  Walther and Shiloh set it up to primarily ride tracks such as Glen Helen and Cahuilla.  Riding Glen Helen during 2 Stroke Nationals towards the end of the day (when they usually hold the women’s classes…..I guess that builds character right?) the track is hammered.  She got me through it all with only a few oh shit moments.  Are you really riding if you don’t turn your blood cold at least once while riding? Trying to lower that count, getting old and I don’t recover like I used too…hahah!  There is something so freeing about a 2 Stroke, just hearing her scream up the hills brings a smile to my face.  I know I’m not fast, but damn for those few moments out there I sure do feel it.
